American Jennie Gai will feature in two semi-finals at the Canada Open badminton championships.
The 25-year-old Nutritional Science graduate has qualified for both the women’s doubles and mixed doubles semi-finals.
She and partner Francesca Corbett kept up to their top seeding in the mixed doubles. The duo were forced to go the distance by the Taiwanese pairing of Hsu Yin-Hui-Lin Jhih Yun before winning the one hour battle 23-21, 16-21, 21-16.
The Americans will take on another Chinese Taipei pair, Liu Kuang Heng-Hsu Yin-Hui in the semi-finals. The unseeded Taiwanese pair defeated third seeds Julien Maio-Lea Palermo of France 21-16, 21-15 in their semi-final tie.
Jennie and partner Francesca Corbett pulled off a big upset in the women’s doubles quarter-finals. They duo, seeded sixth, stunned top seeds Hsu Yin-Hui-Lin Jhih Yun of Chinese Taipei 23-21, 16-21, 21-16.
They will take on fourth seeds Hinata Suzuki-Nao Yamakita for a place in the final.
In the men’s singles, Malaysian Lee Zii Jia comfortably disposed of sixth seeded Taiwanese Wang Po-Wei 21-15, 21-13 in his quarter-final tie. He will take on another unseeded player in the form of Japanese Riki Takei in the semi-finals.
The other semi-finals will see a battle between top seeded Victor Lai of Canada and third seeded Japanese Yudai Okimoto.
The women’s singles quarter-finals went according to script with the hosts top seed Michelle Li easing into a semi-final tie against third seed Riko Gunji of Japan. Second seeded Dane Line Christophersen will play fourth seed Zhang Beiwen of USA in the second semi-final tie.
The men’s doubles semi-finals will see an all-unseeded cast after the last standing seeds Christopher Grimley-Matthew Grimley crashed out.
The Scottish fourth seeds, were beaten 21-12, 14-21, 14-21 by Japan’s Takuto Goto-Tsubasa Yoshida in the quarter-finals.
