Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsmpran
Top seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsmpran are out in of the mixed doubles of the Malaysian Masters badminton championships in Kuala Lumpur.
The pair retired while leading 11-5 against teammates Pakkapon Teeraratsakul-Sapsiree Taerattanachai. The were cruising to the lead but decided to concede the tie during the breather with Supissara apparently uneasy with her heavily strapped knees.
Dechapol, who won the title here in 2023 alongside Sapsiree Taerattanachai, was hoping to win the title with a different partner this time around.
Also out of the mixed doubles competition is the Indonesian pairing of Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu. The fifth seeds were beaten 19-21, 21-12, 19-21 by the American pairing of Presley Smith-Jennie Gai.
There were also several other shock results on the second day of the USD500,000 tournament, including a big win for the hosts. Former world junior champion, saddled with injuries in recent times, stunned fourth seeded Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand 21-6, 16-21, 21-10 in the women’s singles.
It was Jin Wei’s first win over her Thai rival in five meetings, stretching back to the Indonesian Masters ten years ago.
Since finishing runner-up at the Thailand Masters in January and winning the Singapore International Challenge in February, Jin Wei had suffered a string of early exits including first-round defeats at the Asia Championships and last week’s Thailand Open.
In the men’s singles, India Lakshya Sen, seeded eighth, was shown the exit in the first round by Indonesian Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah. In their first ever meeting at the international arena, Zaki carved out a stunning 21-17, 21-11 upset.
Defending champion Li Shifeng of China, was also almost packed out, but the fifth seed persevered in a hard-fought second game, before beating Japan’s Minoru Koga 17-21, 22-20, 21-15 in a 71-minute battle.
Similarly, third seed Christo Popov was also given a fright before he overcame Japan’s Koki Watanabe 14-21, 24-22, 21-16.
In the women’s doubles, fourth seeded Kaho Osawa-Mai Tanabe were edged out 17-21, 19-21 by the Thai duo of Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn-Sabrina Sophita Wedler.
It was also bad news for newly crowned Thailand Open men’s doubles champions Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin. The pair saw their hopes dashed after being beaten 19-21, 21-13, 15-21 by China’s Hu Keyuan-Lin Xiangyi.
