Vietnam are the ASEAN Boy’s Under-17 Football champions for a record fourth time. In the final, they romped past Malaysia 3-0.
Having also beaten the Malaysian side 4-0 in their opening group match, Vietnam continued their domination in the final, leading 2-0 at half-time.
In the battle for third placings, defending champion Australia thrashed a hapless Laos 8-0, crashing in five goals in the first half.
Vietnam had won the title in 2006, 2010 and 2017, and with the win again at the Gelora Delta Stadium in Sidoarja they move past Thailand and Australia, who have also won three title in the series.
Malaysia were hoping of a third title, having also won in 2013 and 20-19 but they were denied by a more polished Vietnamese.
To be fair, Malaysia had only fielded their Under-16 team and making the final was by itself a big achievement.
Vietnam took the lead in the final in the 11th minute with well taken strike from Đào Quý Vương.
Deep into the injury time Nguyễn Văn Dương doubled the score. That goal cane four minutes after the regulation time had ended in the first half.
Văn Dương picked up his second and Vietnam’s third in the 54th minute to seal the tie for Vietnam.
Meanwhile, Georgio Hassrati claimed five of the Australian goals including a penalty in the 29th minute. He picked up his other goals in the 31st, 40th, 51st and five minutes into the second half injury time.
The other Australian goals came from Josef Sikora (20th) and Aston Reid (44th and 58th)
