Mixed doubles fifth seeds Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet of Chinese Taipei were the early casualties on the opening day of the Badminton Asia Championships in Jiangbei, China.
With the qualifying stages taking precedence, the mixed double was the only main draw competition to start today. The Taiwanese pair were beaten 21-19, 19-21, 7-21 by Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi after a 70-minute battle.
All the other seeded pairs made it past the opening round. Top seeded Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping cruised past Thailand’s Pakkapon Teeraratsakul-Sapsiree Taerattanachai 21-5, 21-13.
Malaysia’s top pair of Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei were forced to play much harder but managed to get past a resurgent Haruki Kawabe-Kokona Ishikawa of Japan 21-10, 21-19.
Third seeded Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran were also a class above in their match against Bobby Setiabudi-Melati Daeva Oktavianti of Indonesia 21-9, 21-14 in their first round match.
The main draw for all other categories starts tomorrow. Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn, the former three-time world junior and the 2023 world champion, will open his accounts in the men’s singles against Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long.
Second seeded Shi Yuqi of China will play Lee Chia Hao of Chinese Taipei.
In the women’s singles, world number one An Se-young of Korea will be looking to rebound after her final loss to China’s Wang Zhiyi at the All-England last month.
Se-young will take on Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min in her opening match while Zhiyi, seeded second plays Chinese-Taipei’s Chiu Pin-Chian in the first round.
Korea’s Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae and Malaysia’s Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik are the top two seeds in the men’s doubles.
Aaron-Wooi Yik will take on the Taiwanese duo of Chiu Hsiang-chieh-Wang Chi-lin in their opening match while the Korean top seeds take on India’s Hariharan Amsakarunan-M.R. Arjun tomorrow.
Women’s doubles top seeds Liu Shenshu-Tan Ning take on Indonesians Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma-Meilysa Trias Puspitasari while second seeds Pearly Tan-Thinaah Muralitharan take on Hong Kong’s Fan Kayan-Yau Mauying.
