Rakshita Sree Santhosh Ramraj
India’s Rakshita Sree Santhosh Ramraj is the only top four seed to remain in contention at the Vietnam International Badminton Challenge in Hanoi.
The second seed struggled past Chinese Taipei’s Liang Ting Yu 21-12, 20-22, 21-19 to qualify for the women’s singles semi-finals against a resurgent Kisona Selvaduray of Malaysia.
Kisona, the top ranked Malaysian player, is looking to rebuild her career after more than year. The 2019 SEA Games champion defeated Taiwanese Peng Yu Wei 21-15, 21-17 in her semi-final tie.
The second semi-finals will pit two unseeded players – Hong Kong’s Happy Lo Sin Yan and Wang Pei Yu of Chinese Taipei.
In the men’s singles, Indonesian Richie Duta Richardo, the sole surviving seed in the quarter-finals defeated Japan’s Riku Hatano 21-12, 21-5 to book his semi-final berth. The 13th seed will take on Korean Kim Hae-deun for a place in the final.
The second semi-final will be an all-Taiwanese clash between Cheng Ju-Sheng and Tsai Cheng-Han.
There were several upsets in the doubles competition, but none as big as the defeat of mixed doubles top seeds Ratchapol Makkasasithorn-Nattamon Laisuan of Thailand.
Hong Kong’s Chan Yin Chak-Ng Tsz Yau stunned the Thai pair 21-13, 21-15 in their quarter-final clash. The Hong pair will play Japan’s Tori Aizawa-Mayu Matsumoto, who themselves picked up an upset 22-20, 21-13 win over the Indonesian duo of Kenzie Yoe-Luna Rianty Saffana in their Last 8 tie.
Seventh seeds Hiroki Midorikawa-Nami Matsuyama survived theor quarter-final clash after edging past Korean’s Kim Jae-hyeon-Jang Ha-jeong 21-14, 17-21, 21-17. The will play Malaysia unseeded pairing of Wee Yee Hern-Clarissa San in the semi-finals.
Both the fifth and eighth seeds in the men’s doubles are also out in the quarter-finals.
Huang Tsung-I-Lin Ting-Yu of Chinese Taipei eased by UAE’s fifth seeded pairing of Dev Ayappan-Dhiren Ayyappan 21-6, 21-11 while Korea’s Cho Song-hyun-Kim Jae-hyeon scrapped past eighth seeds Lin Chia Yen-Lin Yong Sheng of Chinese Taipei 16-21, 21-18, 22-20 in their respective quarter-final ties.
In the women’s doubles, eighth seeds Moe Aoki-Hina Osawa of Japan pulled off a stunning upset of second seeds Yu Hsuan Chen-Liu Chiao-Yun of Chinese Taipei, winning 21-19, 21-16.
The only other seeds in the draw was also shown the exit as Japan’s Tomona Harima-Yuho Imai sent the Malaysian third seeds Chong Jie Yu-Vanessa Ng packing out of contention with a well-deserved 21-19, 21-18 victory.
