Wang Zhiyi
Wang Zhiyi ended Korean ace An e-young’s 36-match unbeaten streak to capture the All-England badminton championships. It was an eventful day with Chinese-Taipei’s Lin Chun-yi claiming his biggest title on the BWF Tour, winning the men’s singles title.
Se-young had dominated with an 18-4 head-to-head record over Zhiyi before this match. Zhiyi finally reversed a 10-game losing streak, winning 21-15, 21-19.
In the men’s final, Chun -yi accounted for India’s Lakshya Sen, who had hoped to continue his fairytale run in the competition with a maiden victory in his second final appearance.
Chun-yi, the World No. 11, was ruthless with a dominant first game before a controlled performance in the second earned him a 21-15, 22-20 victory.
It’s the first All England Open title for the 26-year-old, and his first triumph in a Super 1000 event after having won the India Open in January.
World No. 1 men’s doubles pair Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae defeated world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik 18-21, 21-12, 21-19.. This marked the first time in 40 years—a feat last achieved by Park Joo-bong and Kim Moon-soo in 1986—that a Korean pair had won consecutive All England Open men’s doubles titles.
Top ranked Liu Chengsu-Tan Ning of China gunned down World No. 4 women’s doubles pair Baek Ha-na-Li So-hee 21-18, 21-12.
Useeeded Ye Hong Wei-Nicole Gonzales Chan of Chiense Taipei gunned down high-ridign French duo Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue 21-19, 21-18 for the mixed doubles title.
Meanwhile, at the Singapore International Series, Thailand and Indonesia dominated with two titles apiece.
