Sports infrastructure seen as vital
Minister of National defence Tea Banh emphasised the need for the correct maintenance and usage of sports facilities used as the avenues of the 32nd SEA Games and 12th ASEAN Para Games. This, he stated, is crucial for the sustained growth and recognition of the country’s sports sector.
Tea Banh acknowledged Cambodia’s success in hosting the games. He outlined the government’s long-term objective of nurturing the sports sector while ensuring peace, independence, and comprehensive development.
“Continuous development of national sports teams requires the collaboration of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport with other relevant institutions,” he remarked while attending an awards ceremony for the recent SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games on June 27.
He added that a fresh national sports strategic plan should be developed, considering the success of SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games this year.
“The sports facilities and materials we used are not just important for maintenance but should also be recycled or commercially utilised to sustain their quality,” he explained.
He further encouraged Cambodian sports institutions and other stakeholders to organise competitions that draw international participants. This, he believes, will not only protect the games’ legacy but also create employment for athletes.
Tea Banh pointed out that regular competitions in Cambodia could improve the abilities of local athletes.
“It’s vital that we excel in sports skills and show innovation, as we observe rapid development in sports in other countries,” he asserted.
He urged the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts to keep sports materials and performance clothes in good condition to bolster artistic performance for national benefit. He also asked various committees, ministries, and federations of national sports to settle all payments related to the recent SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games within three months.
“The financial commission, in collaboration with the expert commission, the federations of national sports, relevant bodies, and the private sector should finalise all payments by September 2023,” he added.
The minister also focused on the importance of transparent and efficient reporting of income, expenses, budget, and donations received in support of the events.
